The wife of the late Gay Byrne says she “counts her blessings” about having a wonderful family as she opens up about moving on since his death.
Broadcasting giant Gay passed away in November 2019 at 85, after battling prostate cancer.
But just over two years later, Kathleen (87) says she “counts her blessings” for her wonderful family.
“I’m not too bad. I’m in a better place than I was. It’s not easy,” she told The Star.
“Things come in waves at different times on different occasions.
“I have a friend whose husband is dead six years.
“My husband is dead over two years and she still has different moments every day.
“It’s something that hits you unexpectedly but then you have to count your blessings and I have the most wonderful family.
“I have five grandchildren.
“There is an interest and something happening in my life every day, which is good.”
Kathleen stepped out on the red carpet on Tuesday for the premiere of Gabriel Byrne’s show Walking With Ghosts.
But she admitted she would usually attend those nights with Gay, saying he would’ve loved to see Gabriel’s stellar performance.
“This is my second outing. My first big night out was to Faith Healer and that was absolutely amazing,” Kathleen said.
“We came to all of these. He would’ve loved it. We love theatre so much.
“Occasionally (I watch the Late Late Show). I’m so glad for Ryan that the audience is back.
“The audience is essential for that kind of show.
“He did a brilliant job without it and I don’t think anybody could say he didn’t. He did.”
