Kate Middleton wears 'Queen tribute' pearls to join Royal Family at Buckingham Palace

The Princess of Wales sported an elegant pearl necklace as she and the Prince of Wales travelled to Buckingham Palace to receive the Queen's coffin.

In what could be seen as a tribute to the late monarch, who was often seen wearing pearls, Kate Middleton combined the jewellery with a smart black outfit.

The 40-year-old was pictured alongside husband William arriving at the royal London property, with other senior royals including the King and Queen Consort also in attendance.

The Queen's coffin was driven to the palace from RAF Northolt after being flown from Edinburgh, where it had been at St Giles' Cathedral.

On Wednesday, it will be taken to Westminster Hall to lie in state ahead of Monday's funeral.

The Daily Mail reported that the Duchess, wearing traditional mourning black, paired the necklace featuring multiple strings of pearls with pearl earrings.

The royals have historically worn pearls at a time of mourning, a tradition that dates back to Queen Victoria.

The Queen wore a pearl necklace after the death of her husband Prince Philip last year.

The founder of Budrevich Fine Jewellery Studio, Arseiny Budrevich, told The Express that royals often wear pearls because they “represent the aristocratic virtues of liberality, magnificence and generosity”, as well as symbolising “purity and chastity”.

“Pearls have been associated with class, elegance and sophistication since the Ptolemaic dynasty in ancient Egypt, where the Royal Family wore pearls to show their status,” he added.

“This tradition was then passed down through the holy Roman empire to the French monarchs who carried it into fashion in the middle ages, where it was subsequently dispersed through Europe.

“This is when the British empire picked up the style.”

Senior royals including the King, Queen Consort, the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended Buckingham Palace on Tuesday as the Queen arrived for the final time to a warm reception from mourners.

The state hearse arrived to claps and cheers from members of the public who braved the rain in the capital.

A guard of honour was formed by the King's Guard as the late monarch arrived at the palace's grand entrance.

All of Elizabeth II's children and grandchildren were on hand to receive the Queen, although Charles and Camilla left Buckingham Palace shortly after the coffin had arrived.

The Queen will stay in the palace's Bow Room overnight before making the short journey to Westminster Hall, where she will lie in state until her funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday.

She will then be buried at St George's Chapel in Windsor.
