Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, once contemplated refusing the title of Princess of Wales due to concerns about being compared to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. In a new book by Robert Jobson titled “Catherine, The Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen,” it was revealed that Middleton felt anxious about inheriting Diana’s iconic title, which was closely associated with the beloved royal figure who tragically passed away in 1997.
Jobson highlighted the discussions surrounding the similarities and differences between Middleton and Diana, both in the public domain and within the royal household, which added to the pressure on Middleton. The prospect of being constantly compared to Diana caused stress for Middleton, to the extent that she considered following in the footsteps of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who chose not to adopt the Princess of Wales title.
Following her engagement to Prince William in 2010, Middleton acknowledged the challenge of living up to Diana's legacy but emphasized the importance of carving her own path. Despite the initial apprehension, Middleton eventually accepted the title of Princess of Wales when William ascended to the throne in September 2022, demonstrating respect for her husband and the monarchy.
While Middleton and William have been focused on earning the trust and respect of the people of Wales, they aim to approach their royal duties with humility and modesty. The transition to the role of Princess of Wales allowed Middleton to be recognized for her own qualities and contributions, rather than solely in comparison to Diana.
However, Middleton faced a health setback earlier this year when she was diagnosed with cancer, leading her to step back from public engagements and prioritize her well-being. Despite attending select events, Middleton has largely remained out of the public eye and is expected to continue her recovery journey at her own pace, with a renewed perspective on life and priorities.
Jobson noted that Middleton's approach to life has shifted from being calendar-driven to focusing on living in the present moment, reflecting a change in perspective following her health challenges. While Middleton's return to public duties is anticipated, the timing will be guided by her health and well-being, emphasizing the importance of self-care and personal growth.
