The art of the morning routine is not to be undermined. In order to ease into the day, many start off with a warm beverage, meditation, or a brisk walk. However, the foundation of a relaxing morning routine all comes down to our surroundings, and Kate Hudson proves that with the right accessories, mornings can be bliss (yes, even Mondays).
The How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days actor and singer shared a morning in her life on her Instagram page, and it involves hot lemon water (with freshly squeezed lemon, naturally), burning palo santo and sage, and eating a wholesome breakfast. Luckily, we rounded up some of her essentials that are all available to shop on Amazon – and we spoke to an expert about how to make a home feel zen 24/7.
First and foremost, a calming home is dependent on its color scheme, and there are a select few shades that contribute to feelings of well-being.
'Choosing the right color palette is fundamental in creating a calming environment for your home,' says Cassandra Leisz, Creative Director at Ruggable. 'Sage green helps bring the outdoors in. Muted, verdant tones like green offer the same biophilic, wellness-inducing effects as spending time in nature. It’s a versatile, neutral-alternative shade that will help you create a serene and soothing atmosphere in your home.'
She continues, 'Like sage green, cool blue tones can promote calming feelings of peace and tranquillity. Light blues are reminiscent of the sky, the ocean, and other elements found within nature. It’s an effortless, refreshing shade that can brighten up a room and help clear your mind.'
Another tactic is incorporating elements of nature into our homes.
'Bringing a touch of the outdoors into your room can enhance the feeling of being connected to the natural world,' says Leisz. 'That’s why filling a room with live plants and herbs, especially ones that have a strong scent to them, is one of my favorite ways to calm the senses. I recommend planting an herb garden on your windowsill or in your kitchen filled with rosemary, lavender, and chamomile flowers, which are herbs known for their calming effects.'
Hudson's routine taps into this element with her palo santo and sage burning, which creates a rich, woody scent that is known for its calming properties.
Finally, an underrated but equally important contributing factor to creating a peaceful home is lighting.
'For a relaxing atmosphere, stay away from bright, white lights and opt for more yellow and gold tones,' Leisz says. 'Choosing light temperatures with a lower Kelvin number (i.e., 3000 or below) will create a warmer, softer visual environment. Furthermore, make use of the natural lighting within your room. Opt for sheer fabric curtains to enable more natural sunlight to come through. This will allow the room to feel lighter and airy to give a more relaxing feel.'
We would also recommend lighting candles as a form of natural lighting; even better if they are scented in the aforementioned lavender scent. While the above are larger changes, below, we have curated a selection of products that will assist in making a morning routine relaxing and seamless.
