Kate Garraway shares update of 'vulnerable' husband Derek in new ITV documentary

Kate Garraway opened up about what life is like with her husband Derek Draper in the first-look clip for the documentary Caring For Derek.

The talk show presenter has been looking after her husband since he fell seriously ill with the coronavirus in March 2020.

He was in the hospital for over a year and was even put into a medically-induced coma. Derek is now slowly recovering at home.

In a first-look advertisement for the ITV programme, the 54-year-old said: "I'm very protective of people seeing him vulnerable but this is the reality of life for people that are caring.

"The person he is now, in many ways, is a stranger."

Good Morning Britain host Kate has been slowly trying to accept the changes in her life with her husband.

"If we have a love and he can be a dad to the children in a whole new way, that's life isn't it," she added.

Their children Darcy, 15, and William 12, are also seen in the clip. They were filmed helping their dad in and out of bed.

He also has to use a wheelchair and was seen in it as he spent quality time with his family.

There were times when Derek felt suicidal, but Kate recently said that he is starting to feel more hopeful.

Speaking to You magazine, she explained: "It’s very lonely. It’s very lonely in a very crowded space. It’s hard to admit that, but it’s true.

"But now I think he believes he can get better, but until we know how, it’s challenging - there are very hard days and nights, but, yeah, I’ve got a lot of hope."

She added: “I’m not sure that we’ve ever fallen out of love, but I think a new path is emerging, a new way to be in love."

Kate first welcomed cameras into her family's home last year to create a documentary called Finding Derek.

The emotional programme went on to win a National Television Award.

And at the beginning of this year, Kate was gobsmacked to be awarded an MBE by The Queen in her annual New Year Honours list.

A source close to Kate told new! magazine back in January: “This is all of Kate’s dreams coming true, this is what she hoped would come from her doing I’m A Celebrity in 2019, but the pandemic happened and Derek then obviously got so ill.

“Winning the NTA, taking over from Piers on Life Stories, it’s the most bittersweet thing because Derek is still not well."
