Kate Garraway fans were left emotional during the first episode of the presenter’s new BBC show Your Body Uncovered on Wednesday evening.
The new show sees the Good Morning Britain presenter and Dr Guddi Singh meet patients with everyday medical conditions in the hopes of helping them to better understand their illness.
The 54-year-old is using her extensive knowledge of the medical world from caring for her husband Derek Draper after he contracted coronavirus as the start of the pandemic.
The first episode featured Hilda, who has been suffering with fibroids for years, but most recently caused “extreme” symptoms that left her with a swollen stomach and three-week long periods.
Hilda tearfully explained how the condition has impacted her life and made her increasingly self-conscious.
The 40-year-old said strangers have congratulated her on pregnancy with her ballooning stomach, but in reality she was in tremendous pain.
The BBC2 show uses augmented reality technology, which superimposes computer-generated images to bring patients face to face with their conditions in a unique medical consultation.
Hilda was shown an image of her uterus alongside a healthy version, which was a staggering 40 percent smaller than her own.
The programme revealed that she had a jaw-dropping 100 fibroids, which are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb, and make up the size of a newborn baby in her abdomen.
The images left consultant gynaecologist Mr Stephen Quinn stunned, as he explained he only sees cases like hers a couple of times a year at most.
BBC2 viewers were left equally shocked by the scenes, with many taking to Twitter to empathise for Hilda’s nightmare condition.
One wrote: “OMG. I can't believe what poor Hilda has gone through with her fibroids leaving her uterus 40x its normal size! 90 fibroids in total. Crying for Hilda, she must be in so much pain.”
Another tweeted: “I feel so sorry for this poor lady suffering with this”
A fellow social media user wrote: “Poor Hilda, can't believe the size of her fibroids. She must be in so much pain.”
Another chimed: “Oh My Gosh, I'm In Tears For Hilda. I Pray She Will Be Ok. Hopefully She Can Have Surgery And Full Healing And Recovery.”
Kate sat with Hilda and her best friend and became emotional as she learned what the condition had done to her life.
Hilda paused as she took in the terrifying reality, before saying: “The graphic reality of what's sitting inside my belly is shocking. It's like an inflated balloon. I hadn't expected it to be that big, it's scary.”
She continued: “To me it's normal, but it's not normal. My life has adjusted around the condition, but that shouldn't be the case.”
Dr Guddi said: “Hilda had one of the worst cases of fibroids that even her surgeon had ever seen.
“My mouth literally dropped when we were treated to augmented reality image of what it would look like to have all her fibroids lined up in a row.”
