Kate Garraway 'exhausted' as she gives tough hospital update on husband Derek

An 'exhausted' Kate Garraway has been inundated with support after sharing a tough update about her husband Derek's health, revealing he has been back in hospital.

It's now been more than two years since former political aide Derek found himself in hospital after being struck down by coronavirus. As Kate and the couple's two children, Billy and Darcy, were unable to visit him due to strict lockdown restrictions put in place at the start of the pandemic, Derek deteriorated and was placed in a medically induced coma.

Thankfully, unlike many other Covid victims in the UK, Derek survived the ordeal, although wife Kate was told he was one of the worst affected patients in the whole country. Even when Derek was allowed to finally return home in spring 2021, Kate stayed realistic about the battles to come, saying the family had a 'long road ahead' with Derek's recovery, as she shared their experiences in award-winning documentary Finding Derek.

And on Sunday night, Kate broke the sad news that her other half has been back in hospital. Sharing the comfort she got from being in her garden after a worrying few weeks, Kate took to Instagram to post: "So Derek has been in and out of hospital a lot recently -hopefully the wonderful health teams will help him improve but I woke up early feeling exhausted & very fretful."

She added: "As you know my garden is my #happyplace so came out for some #calm and to get stuck in to some weeding & planting. It’s been ages since have been able to & I really missed it but nature hasn’t me . The flowers are blooming, fruits growing , leaves dancing in the breeze. Am sure there’s a message in there somewhere for how life finds a way , and I certainly feel better for being in amongst it."

Kate was immediately with well wishes from her many followers and TV peers. Gaby Roslin commented: "Sending you hugs," while Kate's Good Morning Britain colleague Susanna Reid reacted with a trio of heart emojis.

A follower replied: "Aw so sad to hear about derek being in and out of hospital. It must be such a worry for you all. Often think about him and its lovely seeing you on GMB with Ben - my 2 fav people. You are such a beautiful person inside and out. Hope darcy and billy okay."
