Kate Ferdinand feeling 'overwhelmed’ by Mother’s Day as she cares for blended family

Kate Ferdinand confessed she was 'overwhelmed’ by Mother’s Day as she shared a series of heartbreaking stories on her new podcast.

The 30-year-old launched Blended earlier this week, and told fans she wanted to offer support, advice and help to those in a blended family.

Kate became stepmum to Rio Ferdinand's three teenage kids, Tate, 13, Lorenz, 15, and Tia, 10, when she wed the former footballer in 2019, but she confessed to feeling “alone” as she felt unable to celebrate Mother's Day as the kids were grieving the loss of their mother, Rebecca Ellison.

In the first episode, Kate warned her listeners it would be “tough”, as she shared voice notes from people around the country, who admitted to struggling on Mother's Day, and shared the reasons why they were anxious, sad, and lonely.

Hearing stories from women and men who had suffered stillbirth, infertility, and the loss of their own mothers, Kate wanted her listeners to understand it can be a really difficult day for thousands of women.

One woman shared the devastating loss of her son Arlo, who was stillborn, while another confessed he was still reeling from the loss of his “irreplaceable” mother.

Later on in the episode, Kate said she spoke to step-daughter and mother duo Kim and Amelia earlier this month, and “could really relate” to the story of their blended family.

Amelia discussed how she really struggled calling Kim ‘mum’, and said she was torn between her “loyalty” to her late mum and stepmum.

Amelia then addressed Kate directly, as she said while she understood there was “grief” in their house after the loss of Rio’s late wife Rebecca, she reminded the former The Only Way Is Essex star that she “still had a son”.

“That shouldn’t take away that you have your son, and that is your day. He’s your first child, your first biological child, and it is hard, but you’ve got to celebrate people who are here,” she said.

“It’s just another day, but it’s the build up, the cards, the flowers… it’s everywhere on social media,” Kate explained.

“It’s just non-stop. It can be overwhelming,” she shared.
