FBI Director Kash Patel fired a dozen agents from the elite CI-12 global spy unit last Wednesday, which monitors threats from Iran.
The firings occurred after Patel learned his and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles’ phones were subpoenaed in the probe into classified documents at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
The removal of the CI-12 unit, which specializes in Middle East threats and classified document investigations, left the FBI without a key global espionage capability.
The firings happened just days before the U.S. and Israel launched 'Operation Epic Fury,' involving airstrikes on Iran that killed its Supreme Leader and escalated conflict in the Middle East.
Donald Trump admitted in a letter to Congress that the full scope and duration of military operations against Iran are currently unknown, despite earlier suggestions of a shorter conflict.
