Karnataka: No let-up in rain, holiday announced for schools

BENGALURU: Heavy rain continued to lash coastal districts, parts of Malnad and Kodagu on Tuesday, with the meteorological department forecasting downpour for one more day and widespread rain towards the weekend.

Mangaluru reported hours-long power outage, landslides, artificial flooding and houses damaged due to inundation. Four flights coming into or leaving from Mangaluru airport were delayed or diverted due to the rain. Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamgaluru and Kodagu districts have announced a holiday for anganwadis and schools in the affected areas on Wednesday. While Talapady in Mangaluru taluk received 238 mm of rainfall, Naringana in Bantwal taluk received 231mm rain.

Kodagu, too, suffered power outage from Monday evening to Tuesday morning. In the district, a 69-year-old woman had a narrow escape when the bathroom wall of her house caved in due to heavy rain. Landslides have occurred at many places along the Madikeri-Mangaluru road.

A six-year-old girl, feared washed away in Chikkamagaluru district, is yet to be traced. Sources said rescue personnel searched 6km of Kabbinahalli stream in Chikkamagaluru taluk, but in vain. The operation will continue on Wednesday.
