Karnataka: Brijesh Kalappa quits Congress, likely to join AAP

BENGALURU: AICC spokesperson and senior Congress functionary from Karnataka, Brijesh Kalappa on Wednesday resigned as member of the party, ending his 25-year association. He is likely to join the Arvind Kejriwalled Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) soon.

“Even at the worst of times for the party in the aftermath of the 2014 and 2019 debacles, I have never felt enervated and lacking in energy and enthusiasm. But, in the recent past, I have been finding myself lacking in passion, while my own performance has been listless and perfunctory,” he said in his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi.

“It is under these circumstances that I am left with little option but to resign from primary membership of the Indian National Congress and to end an association that began in 1997,” he said.

A Supreme Court advocate, Kalappa was appointed Karnataka’s legal advisor with the rank

of minister and was a wellknown face of the party on news channel debates.

Sources say Kalappa is planning to contest next year’s assembly polls from Virajpet seat in his home district of Kodagu, from where AS Ponnanna, KPCC spokesperson and former additional advocate general is also an aspirant.

During the 2018 assembly election, Kalappa expressed his displeasure at being denied the ticket to contest from Madikeri.
