BELAGAVI: Seven labourers were killed on the spot and 14 others injured after the multi-utility vehicle (MUV) they were travelling in fell into the Ballari Nala near Kanabargi, on the outskirts of the city, on Sunday morning.
Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, who was in the city attending a private event, announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of those killed in the accident while the district administration announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh. As five of the labourers were registered construction workers, they will get another Rs 5 lakh additional compensation from the labour department, the chief minister said. tnn
MUV driver lost control, crashed into bridge wall
The medical expenses of the injured labourers will be borne by the government. Three of them are critical. Marihal police rushed to the spot and extricated the crushed bodies from beneath the vehicle.
The 21 labourers were travelling to Sambra via Ankalagi to work in the railway department. Police commissioner Boralingaiah MB said that the driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed the retaining wall of the bridge, and then fell into the stream. The deceased are Adiveppa Chilabhavi (27), Basavaraj Dalavi (30), Basavaraj Hanumannavar (51) and Akash Gasti (22) of Akkatangerhal village, Fakirappa Harijan (55) and Mallappa Dasanatti (30) from Dasanatti village and Basavaraj Sanadi (35) of Mallapur (SA) of Mallapur, all from Gokak taluk.
