Karim Benzema sends Cristiano Ronaldo goal record warning ahead of Real Madrid vs Liverpool

Real Madrid star Karim Benzema has warned that Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League record is there to be broken.

Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid at the last 16 stage this season. Ronaldo scored six goals to help United progress from the group stage, but he could not find the back of the net in the two legs versus Atletico.

Regardless of that result, Ronaldo is still regarded as the Champions League's finest player. The forward has the most appearances in the Champions League, he's the competition's all-time leading goalscorer and the only player to have won the competition on five occasions in the modern era. Ronaldo has also scored a record 17 goals in one Champions League campaign.

Benzema is aiming to break that latter record when Real Madrid play Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday. The French striker has been talismanic for Madrid this season and he's scored 15 goals in their Champions League campaign — meaning he would need a hat-trick in the final to break Ronaldo's record as his side visit at the Stade de France in Paris.

"Records will always exist, and they are there to be broken," Benzema told UEFA.

"For me, what matters the most is to give it my all on the pitch to help my team win; if I can score or assist goals, that’s important, but the most important thing is to step on the pitch and win the game. My favourite goal this season?

"They’re all good and important. The most beautiful is maybe the third goal against PSG or the penalty against Manchester City, but the header against Chelsea was good too because it was beautiful play."
