Karim Benzema in World Cup return hope as Real Madrid talisman could defy medical diagnosis for France

Karim Benzema could make a sensational return to the France squad in a major boost for their World Cup hopes.

The 2018 winners have been rocked by a slate of injuries, including an ACL injury to Lucas Hernandez in their opener against Australia. One of their bigger blows occurred before kick-off in Qatar as the Ballon d'Or winner was ruled out of the middle-east contests with a tear in his left thigh. But according to multiple Spanish media sources, his chances aren't dead yet.

It's claimed he has recovered quicker than first thought and according to FIFA rules, Benzema can return to the Les Blues squad and compete in whatever is left of the tournament if he returns. He was included in the initial squad and is therefore already guaranteed to win a medal should his nation triumph again, just like they did at Russia 2018 when they beat Croatia.

Benzema has had another stellar year with Real Madrid, winning the prize as football's best player for the calendar year after claiming Champions League and La Liga glory. It would cap off a memorable 2022 if he can make win his World Cup fitness race.
