Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes could secure NFL record to crown MVP season

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has the chance to secure an NFL record for most consecutive completed passes when he faces the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday.

During the 30-24 overtime win over the Houston Texans, Mahomes completed his final 20 pass attempts. He completed 36 of his 41 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover in a remarkable performance by the signal-caller.

The current record of 25 consecutive completions is held by four different quarterbacks. Tennessee Titans starter Ryan Tannehill did it over two games in 2015 when he was with the Miami Dolphins, while Marcus Mariota also achieved the record across two games in 2018.

Former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and Nick Foles - who was with the Philadelphia Eagles at the time - achieved the feat in a single game back in 2018. If Mahomes completes his first six passes, he will stand alone as the holder of the record.

“I did not know that at all, and that doesn’t sound like me,” Mahomes told PFT after the tight win over the Texans. “So that’s probably a one-time thing and I’ll just cherish that one.”

Mahomes is enjoying a stellar season and is considered one of the favourites to win the MVP award. The 27-year-old has thrown for 4,496 yards and 35 touchdowns with a 67.4% completion rate.

He is also posting a rating of 105.0, which is third in the NFL behind Dolphins star Tua Tagovailoa (107.8) and Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith (105.3). Mahomes has been excellent all season and will have a strong case to win his second MVP after he won the award in 2018.

Back in 2018, Mahomes was the runaway winner of the MVP award after he threw for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He became the only quarterback in history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a single season in both college and in the NFL.

Mahomes has led the Chiefs to an 11-3 record and will face the Seahawks at Arrowhead Stadium on Christmas Eve.
