Kevin Walters has declared the battle for Australia's fullback berth remains wide open despite Reece Walsh winning the nod over James Tedesco to start in the Kangaroos' World Cup opener.

Walters claimed ahead of Thursday night's clash with New Zealand that Tedesco - the captain as Australia lifted the trophy four years ago - would have a chance to prove his worth in next Sunday's group-stage game against Fiji in Brisbane.
