Kalvin Phillips opens up on freak gym accident that nearly caused another Man City setback

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has revealed that a freak accident in the gym almost handed him another injury setback and scuppered any hopes he had of going to the World Cup in Qatar.

Having picked up a shoulder injury during a friendly with Barcelona, Phillips has been in a race to recover in time for the prestigious tournament. The 26-year-old has been a miss for the Blues so far this campaign and he showed what Pep Guardiola had been missing during the Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea.

Despite playing 40 minutes for City in the cup competition, Guardiola opted to keep Phillips as an unused substitute three days later during the defeat to Brentford. Speaking at a press conference in Qatar, the midfielder explained why this was the case and how he nearly did not make it onto the plane for the World Cup.
