Kalvin Phillips admits he could leave Manchester City in January in pursuit of more regular first-team football.
The former Leeds midfielder has struggled for game time at the Etihad Stadium since moving to the club during the summer of 2022 and has recently seen competition for places increase even further.
City brought in Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes during the summer transfer window and Pep Guardiola has also trusted young Rico Lewis in midfield ahead of Phillips during Rodri’s recent suspension.
West Ham were interested in a move for the 27-year-old this summer as they looked to replace Declan Rice, though Phillips rejected a move.
Still, with England now having qualified for Euro 2024 thanks to a 3-1 win over Italy on Wednesday night, game time is of the utmost importance.
Gareth Southgate has selected the midfielder even despite his lack of involvement at club level, partly because of England’s lack of a deep-lying playmaker, but that is surely not a long-term policy.
With Jordan Henderson now playing in Saudi Arabia too, there is a real chance for Phillips to reclaim his regular starting berth for England too, having starred during the run to the Euro 2020 final.
Newcastle have been linked with a move in January too and Phillips admits he may consider an exit.
"I want to play football and want to play as much as possible,” he said .
"Over the last year and a half I haven't been able to do that due to injuries and [other factors]. It's something I am going to have to think about.
"Hopefully my chance does come but if it doesn't then I will have to make other decisions as well."
