Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson is to join Virgin Radio UK on a full-time basis. It has been reported that he will take over the drivetime show on weekdays, which runs from 4pm until 7pm.
Wilson has worked with the station previously, having stood in for Chris Evans on the breakfast show. Now, from January 9, 2023, he will have his own programme, reports Radio Today.
He said: “I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to getting started on Virgin Radio. Music is my number one passion, but I’m so excited about having some fun in a playful and creative space for drive time. Plus I’ll be working alongside some amazing and talented people who have been some of my radio heroes.
“I’ve been interviewed by most of them and now I get to work with them, including Chris, who has probably interviewed me more than my doctor. Virgin Radio listeners are incredible so I’m excited to entertain them all in the New Year.”
Virgin Radio UK Content Director Mike Cass said: “Ricky is a legend in the music business, and we’re extremely excited to have him joining Virgin Radio in January. Ricky will bring his electric energy and infectious personality to the drivetime slot, keeping our listeners entertained on their way home from work. I can’t wait for our audience to hear his show.”
Wilson has also hosted podcasts with radio legend Tony Blackburn alongside shows on BBC Radio 2. Steve Denyer, who currently hosts drivetime on Virgin, also hosts the evening show on Virgin Radio 80s Plus. It's not yet clear whether he will stay with the flagship station in another slot.
