JYSK Letterkenny: IKEA retail 'rival' set to open in matter of weeks

Popular homeware store JYSK - a rival to giant IKEA - will be opening its doors to a new store just over 20 miles outside of Derry, it has emerged.

The Danish flat-pack furniture company is to open a branch at the Letterkenny Retail Park. It's understood it will open in a vacant retail hub close to Pearse Road.

The move will be much welcomed to towns across the Northern Ireland border that are often forced to travel at least over an hour to travel to IKEA in Belfast. The distance between Letterkenny and Derry is around 35 minutes.

JYSK has more than 3,000 stores and webshops in 51 countries. The brand launched in the Republic of Ireland in April 2019 and has at least nine stores nationwide. It has no stores in Northern Ireland to date.

The homeware store offers an extensive selection of furniture and Scandi-style accessories in store - including beds, bedroom furniture, kitchen accessories and more.

Speaking last year, JYSK'S Roni Tuominen said: “When we launched JYSK in Ireland, we announced that we would open 15 new stores in the first two years.

"The pandemic hampered our plans a little, but we are back on track and look forward to opening six stores by the end of 2021 to bring our total in Ireland to 15.

"We have ambitious plans for JYSK in Ireland in the coming years."
