Justin Bieber swapped the arena for a patch of grass in Los Angeles this week, turning up without warning at MacArthur Park and breaking into an impromptu performance.
The “Peaches” singer, 32, turned up at the park on Tuesday, where videos shared on social media show him sitting on the grass, playing percussion, and singing to a small crowd that had gathered around him.
The impromptu set showed Bieber performing “Yukon”, “Daisies”, “Speed Demon” and “All I Can Take”, as well as “Let Me Love You”, his 2016 collaboration with DJ Snake.
Bieber reportedly arrived with four bandmates, acoustic and electric guitars, a cajón, a microphone and PA system, and two amplifiers.
“Justin Bieber just randomly pulled up to MacArthur Park? The audience is just me, three nurses, and like 14 homeless guys, this is INSANE! Is this him? At the end he signed this one guy’s wheelchair, that’s awesome,” wrote one Instagram user, who was present at the site.
“You’re just filming at MacArthur Park and your CHILDHOOD CRUSH JUSTIN BIEBER randomly starts putting on a FREE CONCERT in the middle of the grass?!” wrote another.
The “Stay” singer had not originally gone to MacArthur Park to only put on a concert, according to a source close to the singer who spoke to E! News. They said Bieber had gone there to distribute supplies and resources to people experiencing homelessness, including gift cards and water bottles.
The owner of Annie’s Bakery Cafe, located close to where Bieber performed, told Page Six he saw the singer and his friends handing out “small paper bags” to homeless people nearby, and two of the singer’s associates bought all of the bakery’s freshly made doughnuts to distribute to people gathered around the performance.
The Independent has reached out to representatives for Bieber for comment.
In multiple social media videos, Bieber can be seen interacting with those in the park, shaking hands with a young boy and wishing another one a happy birthday.
MacArthur Park has become a particularly loaded setting in Los Angeles, after years of problems with drug use, overdoses, gang activity, and homelessness. In May, federal and local authorities arrested 18 people in a crackdown on what they described as an “open-air drug market”, including two people alleged to be major suppliers of fentanyl and methamphetamine in the area, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.
A month later, Los Angeles police and federal agents carried out another operation at the park, arresting 13 people, largely for what the police described as quality-of-life violations, including being under the influence of narcotics in public, drinking in public, and having encampments in the park.
Los Angeles City Council member Eunisses Hernandez’s office said more than $27m has been invested in the area, including unarmed Peace Ambassador teams, street-medicine and overdose-response services, community clean-up crews, and youth programmes.

Naomi Roochnik, a spokesperson for Hernandez, said: “We’re excited to see Justin Bieber enjoying MacArthur Park, just as countless other Angelenos do every day, experiencing what nearly four years of sustained investment and community partnership have made possible.”
Los Angeles county district attorney Nathan Hochman posted on X, formerly Twitter, that Bieber’s surprise performance was “a testament to the progress we are achieving to take back the park from drug dealers and enliven it for families”.
