NEW DELHI: Parched conditions in the city and the surrounding areas since March 1 have added severity to the heatwaves in the region this summer, met officials said.
“The additional rise in day temperature by two degrees Celsius in every heatwave spell is because of no significant rain activity. Rain in the previous years has helped in providing relief to Delhiites by bringing down the mercury. The impact of a single day’s rain generally persists for two or more days. However, the maximum temperature never came down below 35 degrees Celsius since mid-March this year,” said R K Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD.
