Just Stop Oil protest causes ‘carnage’ in Manchester city centre with disruption on main roads

A Just Stop Oil protest caused ‘carnage’ through Manchester City Centre as roads came to a standstill.

Videos shared with the Manchester Evening News showed a number of orange-clad protestors marching through the streets wirh police in attendance.

The protest started near to the AO Arena, before moving along Trinity Way and heading towards the Manchester Cathedral. The march then moved towards the Arndale before a brief walk inside the shopping centre.

The march is similar to the marches which have disrupted central London in recent weeks. Just Stop Oil members have previously said that the marches are designed to draw attention to the ‘government’s genocidal licensing’ of new oil and gas projects in a climate emergency.

They are demanding that the government stops licensing and consents for all new UK fossil fuel projects.

Commenting on the disruption in Manchester, one person wrote on Twitter: “Carnage in Manchester with the Just Stop Oil protestors”.

Whereas another in the Manchester Arndale commented: “Just Stop Oil slow march and peaceful protest in the Arndale shopping centre in Manchester.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Greater Manchester Police are aware of an ongoing protest in Manchester city centre, causing disruption on the roads.

“Officers are in attendance and are working with partners to maintain safety whilst facilitating the right to peaceful protest.”
