Jury's still out, as it finishes its second full day of deliberations in the rape trial of Bruce Lehrmann

The jury is continuing their deliberations for the second day in the trial of Bruce Lehrmann, the man accused of raping his former colleague Brittany Higgins in 2019.

Mr Lehrmann denies allegations he raped Ms Higgins and has pleaded not guilty.

The jury on Thursday began its first full day of deliberations after retiring on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier in the week, lawyers finished giving their closing submissions in the trial.

Lawyers for Mr Lehrmann suggested to the jury she did not know what happened on the night or may have made up the assault to save her job.

The defence told the jury it was up to the prosecuting lawyers to prove that Mr Lehrmann had committed the crime.

Prosecutors argued that Ms Higgins was a credible witness who had reasons to be concerned for her career if she pursued an official police complaint at the time of the incident.

The jury will return on Monday to continue their deliberations.
