Jury in former Texas Rangers pitcher's sex abuse case is divided 10-2 but still deliberating

A Denton County, Texas, jury Friday is deliberating the fate of former Texas Rangers pitcher John Wetteland, who is accused of sexually abusing a young relative in the early 2000s.

Jurors sent three notes about stalled deliberations prompting Wetteland’s lawyers to ask twice for a mistrial. State District Judge Lee Ann Breading denied both requests.

One of the notes said the jurors were split 10 to 2. The note did not say whether the majority of jurors were in favor of a conviction or acquittal. Breading gave the nine men and three women stern instructions around 2 p.m. to keep deliberating. Jurors sent a third note around 4:40 p.m. saying they were “deadlocked and unwilling to budge.”
