Jury continues deliberating in ACT Supreme Court trial of Bruce Lehrmann

The jury continues to deliberate in the trial of Bruce Lehrmann, the man accused of raping his former colleague Brittany Higgins in 2019.

Mr Lehrmann has pleaded not guilty and has said no sexual activity occurred.

The jury today began its first full day of deliberations after retiring on Wednesday afternoon.

This week lawyers finished giving their closing submissions in the trial.

Prosecutors argued that Ms Higgins was a credible witness who had reasons to be concerned for her career if she pursued an official police complaint at the time of the incident.

Defence lawyers suggested to the jury she did not know what happened on the night or may have made up the assault to save her job.

The court had chosen 16 jurors in case of illness, but all stayed the course and on Wednesday four had to be released by random ballot, leaving 12 to make a final decision.

The trial ran for 12 days and saw 29 witnesses take the stand to give evidence.
