Caoimhin Kelleher watched on from the substitutes bench as his season ended with a 3-0 win for Ireland over Gibraltar on Monday evening.
Goals from Mikey Johnstone, Evan Ferguson and Adam Idah gave the Irish a comfortable victory at the Aviva Stadium as Kelleher ended his term in the same way it began - from the sidelines as an unused substitute.
The Cork-born goalkeeper has become used to filling in as a deputy during his time in the Liverpool first team, with Alisson Becker firmly established as the club's No.1 since his record-breaking £65m move from Roma in 2018.
Kelleher has performed superbly on the whole when asked to play ahead of the Brazil international with the zenith undoubtedly coming when he slammed home the winning penalty in the Carabao Cup final shootout over Chelsea in February of last year after keeping a clean sheet over 120 minutes at Wembley.

His exploits during that particular cup run have since seen him included as part of the goalkeepers' mural at Liverpool's AXA Training Centre, which seeks to celebrate its trophy-winning glovesmen both past and present at Anfield.
The artwork is a show of respect for those who have helped Liverpool to glory and Kelleher's likeness proudly sits alongside legendary faces like Bruce Grobbelaar, Ray Clemence and current custodian, Alisson.
At the age of 24, however, the question over how happy Kelleher is to continue playing second fiddle has grown louder in recent months.
Asked about the prospect of agitating for a move back in December, after a 3-2 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Kelleher answered in a typical laidback style, but conceded it might be something he looks to do this summer.
"I am quite relaxed, so I don't mind watching, but obviously I'd rather be playing but I just try to be as focused as I can be when I watch so I am ready if I am needed," Kelleher said at the time.
"Listen, I think we've obviously only just come back into the middle of the season. So we'll just see what the season brings and then after that we'll see, we'll see what happens after that."
Interest in the goalkeeper is believed to be firm, with the likes of Tottenham, Brentford and Brighton all reportedly taking a closer look amid speculation over their own No.1s at present.
Brentford technical director Lee Dykes said recently: "Kelleher is a good goalkeeper. There is no doubt in that. He is a good goalkeeper. He has not played a lot of games obviously, he has been in the shadows a little bit at Liverpool.” A departure for the in-demand David Raya could see the Londoners move for Kelleher.
Jurgen Klopp insisted last month that it would take "an extraordinary" offer to bring Liverpool to the negotiating table over Kelleher, however, as he insisted the Ireland shot-stopper was not for sale during the transfer window.
"Honestly, I can't see Caoimh leaving," Klopp said. "It must be an extraordinary offer for me to start thinking, I have to say."
Despite Klopp's understandable reluctance to lose an international-class No.2 who is seemingly content with his role as back-up, that resolve is likely to be tested in the coming weeks.
How much Liverpool will be willing to bend, however, will be down to how much Kelleher speaks up about plans for his own future.
The former Ringmahon Rangers youngster is quietly approaching a crossroads of his career and, as he heads off for his annual end-of-season break, he has plenty of food for thought while on the sun loungers ahead of a return to pre-season next month.
