Jurgen Klopp says James Milner’s leadership and quality is ‘not possible to replace’ at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has revealed details behind some of the conversations he held with James Milner before the midfielder signed a new Liverpool contract on Monday, vowing there is “more to come” from the veteran.

The 36-year-old remains a key part of the squad and made 39 appearances during the 2021/22 campaign, including playing in both domestic cup final wins over Chelsea.

Milner talked of the belief Klopp gave him about being able to contribute to a team who have shown they can fight on all fronts even despite his advancing years, while the Liverpool boss insists there is no limit to his involvement.

Klopp believes the leadership and quality the 36-year-old gives his team is “not possible to replace”.

“Typically, the discussions we had around extending his contract were centred on: what kind of contribution do we see him making as a player?” he told the club’s official website.

“My answer to him was the same I’ll share with supporters: we don’t limit it. We just want the same from him again, because that’s not possible to replace. He can still do it and we still need it.

“So I’m grateful he answered the call and agreed to give us the extra year of his extraordinary career. More to come.”
