Jurgen Klopp reveals big Son Heung-min transfer regret ahead of Tottenham clash vs Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp missed out on the chance to sign Son Heung-min before the South Korean forward completed a transfer to Tottenham. The German has labelled the decision not to sign Son earlier in his career as the 'biggest mistake of his life'.

Son has an impressive goalscoring record against the Reds and some could argue that his strike at Anfield last term stopped Klopp's side from winning the Premier League title. The South Korea international has netted four times from his last eight Premier League starts against the Merseyside outfit.

Liverpool and Tottenham are both chasing down a top-four spot after enduring difficult seasons as they look to secure Champions League football next term. The Reds sit seventh in the table, just a single point behind Spurs in fifth, with the two teams set to face each other at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Son has not been at his best this season and has only scored 13 goals in 42 appearances - compared to his impressive tally of 24 goals in 45 appearances last term. Interim Tottenham boss Ryan Mason will hope the 30-year-old can rediscover some good form after scoring against Manchester United in the 2-2 draw earlier this week and help Spurs distance themselves from a rejuvenated Liverpool side.

Klopp will once again watch on as Son lines up against his team rather than in his own squad, with the German having already admitted that not signing the Spurs star earlier in his career is something he regrets.

“One of the biggest mistakes in my life is not signing Son Heung-min,” Klopp told Korean outlet KBS News last November.

“Outstanding player. He is fantastic, a sign of Korean football and one of the best strikers in the world.”

Despite Son's impressive record against the Reds, he has only ended up on the winning side when the two teams have met on one occassion - back in 2017 as Tottenham ran out 4-1 winners.

Whilst Klopp eventually forged a brilliant attacking trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino at Liverpool - the mind boggles thinking about what the Reds would have gone on to win if Son was playing at Anfield.

Now aged 30, Klopp's chances of signing Son look to have faded as the pair come up against each other once again this afternoon.
