Jurgen Klopp 'meets with Sofyan Amrabat's entourage' to discuss Liverpool transfer

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reportedly held a meeting with the representatives of Morocco star Sofyan Amrabat as the Reds attempt to seal a deal for the midfielder.

The Merseyside outfit have been linked with a number of players ahead of the January transfer window opening in just a few weeks time as they attempt to recover from a poor start to the season. A vast array of those have been central midfielders - England sensation Jude Bellingham the most high-profile name to have been linked with a switch to Anfield.

The Borussia Dortmund star is expected to command an extraordinarily high price, meaning that Liverpool could be forced to look elsewhere. A cheaper alternative could potentially be Fiorentina’s Amrabat.

The Reds have already been credited with an interest in the Moroccan, whilst it is suggested that he could be open to leaving the Serie A club in order to satisfy his desire of playing in the Champions League. Now, it appears that Liverpool boss Klopp has intervened in order to get a move over the line.

As per Foot Mercato, the German has already held a meeting with Amrabat’s representatives, whilst fresh discussions are also expected to take place after the World Cup in Qatar. Like Bellingham, Amrabat has caught the eye during his nation’s run to the quarter-finals.

The 26-year-old has played every minute for Morocco as they topped Group F ahead of Croatia and Belgium before beating 2010 champions Spain on penalties. That form has followed the last two-and-a-half seasons impressing for Fiorentina having arrived from Hellas Verona in the summer of 2020.

He currently only has a year-and-a-half left on his contract at the Artemio Franchi Stadium so could potentially be available at a knock-down price. However, there will be a battle for his services with Inter Milan and Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Tottenham also thought to be interested.

The North Londoners have been linked with a move before. Reports suggested that they were close to signing him last January but instead opted for Uruguayan Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus.

The midfielder’s brother - ex-Watford star Nordin Amrabat - is expecting interest to ramp up again following his displays at the World Cup. As quoted by Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, he said: "I am really incredibly proud of Sofyan.

"When you play so well on such a stage – in three matches against countries like Croatia, Belgium and Canada – you have a lot going for you.

"I think the top clubs in Europe who have been sleeping have now woken up. In January, Sofyan himself was already in talks with Tottenham Hotspur, but there was no agreement on the transfer fee with Fiorentina. I think the interested parties will now line up."
