Jurgen Klopp may have already provided an early Liverpool team news hint ahead of Chelsea clash

Chelsea travel to Liverpool at the weekend in what could be a huge game in the race for the top four. Both sides have struggled this season and are currently mid-table on 28 points.

Graham Potter took over from Thomas Tuchel in September and despite a strong start to his Chelsea career has struggled in recent months, with the Blues winning just two of their last 10 games. Liverpool, meanwhile, have equally been as poor under Jurgen Klopp and look a totally different team to the one who reached the Champions League final last season.

Klopp made eight changes for his side's FA Cup third round replay against Wolves on Tuesday night, with Thiago Alcantara, Ibrahima Konate and new signing Cody Gakpo the only players to retain their places following the 3-0 loss to Brighton at the weekend. Harvey Elliott, youngster Stefan Bajcetic and veteran James Milner were among those who came into the side and ultimately impressed in a 1-0 win.

Speaking after the game, Klopp suggested some of the players who came in for the clash against Wolves could be rewarded with a start against Chelsea. “Yeah, yeah,” he said, via The Times. “I don’t think it will be right after one game to say, ‘That will be the team for the next eight weeks.’ Let’s have a look.

"We are not in a casting show. But, of course, the door is open to everyone. Whoever fights has a good chance to play.”

The German added: “It was the reaction we needed to show. We were compact, we were together, we had good challenges, won challenges, and when we got the ball, we played really good football [and] scored an exceptional goal.

“I said to the boys, ‘That is how it feels when you play well and win.’ We can’t remember it really any more because it was so long since that was the case.

“Tonight is an important sign for us. If we had played another game like the last one, I am not sure what the people would have thought. Now they have something to look forward to.”
