Jurgen Klopp makes Liverpool transfers admission ahead of January window

Jurgen Klopp is hopeful for better fortune with injuries during the second half of the season as he confirmed Liverpool are “open” to reinforcements in January.

The Reds signed off ahead of the forthcoming World Cup with a 3-1 Premier League victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Klopp has seen 20 different players miss at least one game this campaign through injury, with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz the current long-term absentees.

And asked if Liverpool would benefit from greater luck with injuries, Klopp said: “It would be absolutely helpful. We had pretty much all of them already (injured), so who would have thought two strikers would be out long term? How can we prepare for that? It is not really possible.

“It has been too many in the wrong moment. Most of them were like contact injuries, Lucho (Diaz) was contact, Ibou (Konate) was contact, so a lot of them were in challenges. Diogo (Jota) not so much, he just had no pre-season and then played often and bam!

“This is the other problem, because Lucho was out, Darwin (Nunez) had his struggles. All of a sudden, you have to play all the time and that’s not too cool. I hope we will be on the other side of it (luck).”

Ibrahima Konate missed Saturday’s game with a minor injury but will now join up with the France squad for the World Cup, while skipper Jordan Henderson was absent due to personal reasons.

Despite the lengthy injury list, Liverpool have won through to the last 16 of both the Champions League and Carabao Cup and remain in touching distance of the Premier League top four.

And of the possibility of transfer business in the New Year, Klopp said: “We are always open to these kinds of things but we don’t have to open this discussion now. If there is something possible, we will do it. If a door opens, we are open as well.

“It is not about wanting or whatever. Of course, we want to improve the team all the time, we just believe in the training ground as well and that we can do it there. We will see what happens.”
