Jurgen Klopp has reportedly opened talks over a sensational Liverpool stay that could see him overtake Bob Paisley as the club's fourth longest serving manager.
The former Borussia Dortmund boss has made himself a modern-day Anfield legend since arriving in 2016, steadily rebuilding the Reds into a European superpower.
The German ended the club's long wait for a major trophy in 2019 by winning the Champions League and followed that up with their first ever Premier League title in 2020.
That earned him a new contract until 2024 but he reiterated as recently as March this year that he plans to leave when that expires.
He said: "It will be fine whenever it will be after I leave. The plan is 2024, thank you very much."
Now however the Daily Mail are reporting that Klopp has opened talks over a new contract after Liverpool dismissed Villarreal to go within touching distance of a third Champions League final of his tenure.
If he signs it and stays until 2025 and surpasses the nine-year mark, he will become the fourth longest serving manager in their history - ahead of legendary Scot Paisely who lasted eight years and 11 months.
To put that into context no manager since Bill Shankly (14 years 7 months) has lasted that long.
Chatter has long been rife over who could replace Klopp with Steven Gerrard a fan favourite.
He penned a new deal at Rangers until 2024 on the same day Klopp signed his last Liverpool contract, with many believing that was no coincidence at the time.
Gerrard has since gone on to Aston Villa where he has got off to a mixed start but it's still widely thought he could be a future Anfield boss.
However if reports are to be believed Gerrard, and any other manager who has designs on the Liverpool hotseat, may have to wait a bit longer yet.
