Jurgen Klopp faces Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota decisions as Liverpool brace for Brentford blow

Having largely kept the same team in recent weeks, Jurgen Klopp made three Liverpool changes for Wednesday's visit from Fulham.

Kostas Tsimikas's return gave Andy Robertson a chance to rest up from his trademark hard-running style at left-back, while captain Jordan Henderson came in at the expense of Harvey Elliott, who has played a lot of football for someone who only came out of his teens last month.

But it was up top where the most striking alteration came as Darwin Nunez started his first match since the goalless draw with Chelsea a month ago alongside Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, who was given back-to-back starts for the first time since September.

Nunez ran himself to a standstill in a full-blooded cameo, winning the penalty that allowed Mohamed Salah to strike home the decisive penalty in the first half. "He was a racehorse," was Klopp's description after the game. "He went for everybody."

The question is whether or not the £64m striker has done enough to keep his place? After a tough start - one that was more down to the difficult situation the club found itself in at the turn of the year - Gakpo is starting to show his real quality on a regular basis and seems to be the most trusted No.9 in a six-man forward department right now.

That could mean a recall for the Netherlands international up top as Nunez continues to try and find rhythm once more after a handful of substitute appearances over the last month. The Uruguay international, however, could yet be asked to play on the left of the front three.

Luis Diaz's Liverpool workload has been considerable for a player who spent six months on the shelf and underwent knee surgery in December. Could the Colombia international be given a breather at the weekend?

If so Nunez will be hopeful of a start in the wide area but a lot also depends on Diogo Jota, whose five goals in recent weeks have seen him nominated for a Player of the Month award. The Portugal international took an almighty whack to the back in the first half of the win over West Ham last week and has been used as a substitute since as a result.

But after having a few more days to really rest up, could Jota be in line for a recall? These are the welcome selection dilemmas for Klopp at least as Brentford prepare to arrive on Merseyside.

In midfield, Thiago Alcantara will play no part after his season was curtailed by a hip injury. Elliott could return but Curtis Jones is expected to continue after playing himself into good form in recent weeks.

Fabinho was one of the key performers against Fulham and will likely anchor the midfield once more. It feels like it could be a decision of going with Henderson or Elliott for this one. There are few real claims from elsewhere in the squad.

At the back Robertson will probably return for Tsimikas with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Alisson Becker all expected to keep their places.
