Jurgen Klopp might be idolised by the Anfield faithful - but he doesn't want to be serenaded by them during games anymore.
Sunday proved another dramatic day in Klopp's tenure in Liverpool, with his side romping into a 3-0 lead within 15 minutes against Spurs, only for the visitors to fightback and level in injury time through Richarlison's header. But the action wasn't done there, with Diogo Jota then pouncing on a defensive error at the death to secure an exhilarating win.
The final whistle was greeted with a mixture of joy and relief from the home fans, who had earlier enjoyed themselves in the afternoon sun when their side were seemingly heading to a comfortable win. Indeed, the popular chant of 'I'm so glad that Jurgen is a Red' had reverberated around the stadium for much of the first half.
Replicating the tune of The Beatles’ famous hit 'I Feel Fine', the song has been frequently belted out by Liverpool fans ever since their Premier League title win in the 2019/20 campaign. But now Klopp is concerned that singing the tribute during games risks jinxing his team.
“I have to say now, I love all of them but my song, don’t sing it!” he said after the win, when asked about the fans. “If you want to sing it, sing it after the game in the bars, wherever. Because it is always like it is closing the game. We are 3-0 up and I hear 'I'm so glad that Jurgen is a Red'. It is not over!
“It would be really nice if you could leave it for later and now it's like 4-3, everyone is happy and we had in the final part of the game, the atmosphere was like an explosion that no one will forget that game ever. Let's keep going.”
Klopp's men will indeed have to 'keep going' if they are to maintain their faint hopes of a top-four finish. Despite four consecutive league wins, they remain fifth, four points off Man Utd having played a game more than their rivals.
But with home games against Fulham and Brentford to come this week, the German boss will be confident of continuing their strong finish to the season following an indifferent campaign. And he lauded the way his side came out of the blocks on Sunday, despite the way things unravelled afterwards before Jota's late intervention.
"The start to the game was absolutely exceptional again, it was some of the best we've played this season for sure,” he said. "Being 3-0 up against a pretty defensive set-up of Tottenham and the way we scored the goals and the way we played offensive and defensive was absolutely exceptional."
