Jurgen Klopp admits he didn't want Liverpool to "humiliate" Bournemouth in 9-0 thrashing

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool 'couldn't have respected Bournemouth more' after their 9-0 victory at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool equalled the joint-biggest win in Premier League history thanks to braces from Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino, as well as an own goal from Chris Mepham. Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Fabio Carvalho also found the net.

Klopp was contemplating taking his foot off the gas against Bournemouth but believed it would be disrespectful to bring five youngsters on. He did give Stefan Bajcetic and Bobby Clark - the son of former Newcastle player Lee - their Premier League debuts.

The result leaves Liverpool eighth in the table after they picked up just two points from their first three Premier League fixtures. Next up for the Reds is the visit of Newcastle - who are yet to suffer defeat this term - on Wednesday evening.

"Very good," said Klopp in his post-match interview. "We wanted to show a reaction. Be ourselves. Getting to be the best version of ourselves. We play a specific way. We scored wonderful goals. The game settled and we kept scoring. It was about keep going.

"Not to humiliate Bournemouth, we couldn’t respect them more. It’s about putting the opponent under pressure. I could bring on the kids, they deserve it so much. Harvey is a special player, wonderful goal. Everything was perfect pretty much."

Do you think anyone ever win 10-0 in the Premier League? Let us know in the comments below!

Saturday was only the fourth time a team has recorded a 9-0 victory in the Premier League. Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United were the first to so back in March 1995 when they put a hopeless Ipswich side to the sword at Old Trafford.

Premier League fans were forced to wait more than 24 years for the result to be recorded again. It came at St Mary's when Leicester thumped Southampton away from home. The Saints were beaten 9-0 again 16 months later by United at Old Trafford.

The goal of the day at Anfield was Alexander-Arnold's thunderbolt in the first half. The right-back played a lovely one-two with Roberto Firmino before letting fly from distance, crashing his effort into the top corner of Mark Travers' welcoming net.

"I don’t like it too much when a player is 35 yards away and the whole crowd shout 'shoooooot' but in this case it worked out well," joked Klopp.

"It's important to get it off the chest and play football. Wednesday will be different. Today the mix of great weather and fantastic football, we don’t have that often at Liverpool so we should cherish it. At least we don’t have to answer the question anymore [about not winning]. A really good day for us. We won’t get carried away.

"If we want to be successful in this league we have to show consistency. That’s what we have to do now. That used to be our strength. We’ll watch Newcastle tomorrow and see what we can do against them."
