Junior doctors vow to strike for three days each month 'for as long as it takes'

Junior doctors will strike for three days every month “for as long as it takes” in their battle over pay, union leaders have warned.

The co-chairmen of the British Medical Association's junior doctors' committee, Rob Laurenson and Vivek Trivedi, said they would stage walkouts until ministers back down.

In an update to members posted on Reddit, they warned the government had “dug their heels in”.

The pair wrote: “They’ve told us they don’t accept that pay has worsened. They’ve told us they don’t respect that the work has gotten harder.

“They’ve told us they don’t acknowledge that the job is more demanding than ever before.

“They don’t value us. They don’t value our work. They don’t value our sacrifice.”

The two union leaders said medics were offered a 5% rise plus a £1,500 one-off payment and some help with exam fees, but warned this was “another real terms pay cut” that was “not a serious opening position for doctors”.

"The government does not intend to negotiate in good faith,” they added.

"We intend to strike for a minimum of three days a month, summer and winter, day and night, for as long as it takes."

Junior doctors will head to the picket line for a 72 hour strike from 7am on June 14.

They held a four-day strike in April and a three-day strike in March, which caused the cancellation of 370,000 appointments and operations.
