June Brown dies aged 95 as tributes flood in for EastEnders' Dot Cotton icon

Tributes have come flooding in for June Brown, after the EastEnders actress died aged 95.

June has earned herself legions of fans for playing the famous Albert Square matriarch for well over 30 years, giving the BBC soap one of its most iconic characters. But on Monday afternoon it was announced that the much loved actress had sadly passed away.

A statement from the EastEnders press team read: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved June Brown, OBE, MBE, sadly passed away last night. “There are not enough words to describe how much June was loved and adored by everyone at EastEnders, her loving warmth, wit and great humour will never be forgotten.

“June created one of the most iconic characters in Dot Cotton, not just in soap but in British television, and having appeared in 2,884 episodes, June’s remarkable performances created some of EastEnders’ finest moments. “We send all our love and deepest sympathies to June’s family and friends.

"A very bright light has gone out at EastEnders today but we shall all be raising a sweet sherry in June’s memory. Rest in peace, our dearest June. You will never be forgotten.”

June's family have also spoken out on her death, with them saying: "We are deeply saddened to announce our beloved mother, June, passed away very peacefully at her home in Surrey on Sunday evening, with her family by her side. We would kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

June's last appearance in EastEnders was in 2020. Scores of tribute were posted on social media within minutes of news of June's death breaking.

One fan tweeted: "Oh darling Dot who we all knew and loved so dearly. You were a part of our childhood watching Eastenders, you were the grandma some of us never had. You will be dearly missed and thank you for all your work and art."

Another wrote: "She was a formidable character, on & off screen. With a cigarette in her mouth, a roller in her hair, in the launderette talking about her rebellious son Nick with Dr. Legg, is how most of us will remember June Brown aka Dot Cotton.

"She was epic in every way & every setting. RIP."
