Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes have a date and location for their UFC women’s bantamweight title rematch.
Peña (11-4 MMA, 7-2 UFC) will attempt to duplicate her upset of Nunes (21-5 MMA, 14-2 UFC) and make the first defense of her title reign in the UFC 277 main event on July 30.
The promotion announced on Saturday that the fight will serve as the main event of the card, which goes down at American Airlines Center in Dallas with a main card that airs on pay-per-view following prelims likely on ESPN and ESPN+.
After a long wait to fight for the title, Peña, No. 1 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie women’s bantamweight rankings, made the most of her opportunity at UFC 269 in December. “The Venezuelan Vixen” scored a monumental upset, ending the dominant title reign of Nunes with a second-round submission.
Pena immediately offered a rematch to Nunes to prove the outcome with no fluke, and now she’ll get the opportunity to cement her position.
No. 2-ranked Nunes will have other plans, though. After putting together an unprecedented run that included winning and defending UFC belts at 135 pounds and 145 pounds, Nunes’ streak came to an abrupt halt in what was an uncharacteristic performance at UFC 269.
Nunes has made big moves in the aftermath of her defeat. She left her longtime training home at American Top Team, and she’ll enter the rematch with Peña under the guise of new coaches and a new team.
The rematch between Peña and Nunes comes on the heels of the pair coaching Season 30 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, which is currently streaming with weekly episodes on ESPN+.
