Judy Murray responds to Wimbledon critics as she backtracks on Emma Raducanu comment

Judy Murray has bit back at online critics who vilified her for remarks made about Emma Raducanu's decision to withdraw from giving Andy Murray one final Wimbledon farewell.

Raducanu was scheduled to play mixed doubles with Andy on Saturday night - but with the former US Open champion also in women's singles last-16 action on Sunday, she pulled out of teaming up along side the Scottish hero - citing "a sore wrist".

That decision irked Andy's mother, Judy, and she immediately commented saying, "yes, astonishing" on social media.

She then proceeded to share a post from the legendary, Serena Williams, which emphasised the privilege of playing mixed doubles with the two-time Wimbledon champion.

Hardcore tennis fans reacted furiously though, highlighting the fact that the three-time Grand Slam winner would have done the exact same if he had a chance of succeeding in a single's tournament with some even stating she should be "ashamed" by her perspective.

Now Judy has claimed that her previous statement was "sarcasm" and that she did have sympathy for Raducanu, taking aim at the Wimbledon scheduling in the process.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Judy wrote: "Not sure anyone understands sarcasm these days. Pretty sure the scheduling (4th match on court 1 with a singles the following day) will have played a major part in any decision making."

Andy is making his last ever appearance at SW19 before he officially ends his professional tennis career at the Paris Olympics later this month.
