Jrue Holiday prefers to remain with the Celtics beyond this season

Jrue Holiday has a player option on his contract for next season worth $37.3 million. The veteran guard is widely expected to opt out of that option at the end of the season. However, during a recent interview with MassLive’s Brian Robb, Holiday revealed that he would prefer to remain with the Boston Celtics moving forward.

As such, the veteran guard is hoping he can negotiate a contract extension once the Celtics are allowed to begin negotiations. Current NBA rules stop a team from negotiating new contracts for six months after acquiring a player via trade, meaning Boston must wait until April.

“I’d like to be here,” Holiday said. “I feel like I’m getting more and more comfortable, loving the guys, loving the organization and loving the city…“My last extension was during the course of the year. I think that we can do both, talk about it and as well as prepare for games and prepare for what the future is.”

Holiday has emerged as a core part of the Celtics rotation. Joe Mazzulla has entrusted Holiday with being a diverse defender, splitting his time between the point-of-attack and cross-matching with opposing bigs. On offense, Holiday has been entrusted to be a three-level scorer who takes intelligent shots rather than chases quick buckets.

The Celtics will likely be keen on extending their partnership with Holiday so that their core rotation is tied down for the immediate future. Then, they can turn their attention toward becoming a perennial contender for the next few years and hopefully winning multiple championships along the way.
