Josh Taylor’s rematch with Jack Catterall is reportedly set to be announced soon.
Taylor held on to his undisputed super lightweight crown after he was handed a controversial decision at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro in front of a partisan home crowd. But he has since vacated his WBC, WBA and IBF belts in order to secure another bout with Catterall and now only holds the WBO belt.
The Tartan Tornado won by split decision last February. But the judges’ decision was met with a furious backlash after Chorley’s Catterall appeared to outbox Taylor to most onlookers, and even having him on the canvas wasn't enough to secure a win for the Englishman. Now he’s set to get another crack at the Prestonpans favourite. The Daily Mail reports that they’ll get it on again in early 2023 after agreeing terms on another fight. Promoter Ben Shalom is hopeful of making a public announcement at some point this week.
Only minor details and “certain promotional elements” are still to be ironed out. Neither fighter has laced up the gloves since and Taylor has even changed trainer. He’s split from Ben Davison in order to team up with Joe McInally.
Shalom, who was enraged by the decision against Catterall in 2021, called for an investigation. But he’s now on the verge of confirming a highly anticipated rematch next year, which he insisted is the only way to right the wrongs of the original clash.
He said: “I'm hoping to be able to announce that in the next week or so. I think that's a huge fight which was in the midst of controversy.
“The only way to correct that is to find a way to do the rematch. It's an extremely important rematch for British boxing.
“I think we're there. We're tying up a few things with the venues and around certain promotional elements, but both fighters are in It's likely now to be very early next year.”
