Josh Taylor has insisted he believes he was rightly named the winner of his hugely controversial fight against Jack Catterall on Saturday night but did leave the door open to a potential rematch.
The Scotsman remained the undisputed super-lightweight world champion after a split decision inside Glasgow’s Hydro Arena, a result that has largely shocked the boxing community.
BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom went as far as to say he was “embarrassed” by the decision while Jamie Moore, Catterall’s trainer, believe his fighter was “absolutely robbed”.
While Taylor stressed he believed he won “a very close fight”, he did suggest he’d be prepared to fight Catterall again, though this time at welterweight.
“My days at 140 are numbered,” wrote Taylor on Instagram.
“My future is at welterweight. Jack Catterall deserves another title shot, and as soon as possible. I’ve never ducked a challenge in my career, and I’d be happy to fight Jack again, but it would have to be at welterweight. Jack is a great sportsman, a helluva fighter, and deserves every bit of the admiration he’s been receiving.”
