The Indianapolis Colts released their unofficial depth chart ahead of their home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and wide receiver Josh Downs was listed as a starter.
One of the bigger battles in training camp, the starting slot receiver, officially has a winner. This battle between veteran Isaiah Mckenzie and the third-rounder in Downs currently slates the latter as the starting slot receiver in Week 1.
Buy Colts TicketsWhile depth charts don’t always reflect the pecking order, head coach Shane Steichen confirmed the rookie is the starting slot receiver when speaking to reporters Wednesday, mentioning the growth he’s shown since training camp started.
“Just the growth he’s made through training camp and just his route-running ability and what he brings. He’s a speed guy. He’s got a great feel on how to run routes. He’s got great hands. I’m excited to see him go out and perform on Sunday.”
Another possible factor in the decision is Downs’ chemistry with fellow rookie, Anthony Richardson.
“Yeah, it’s been huge. Starting when they got drafted, you kind of saw it early on and then even in practice – routes, they’re always talking after a play,” Steichen said. “That to me is great growth of just being on the same page so they’re thinking the same way on certain routes and seeing it the same way. I think when you do that week in and week out and over the years as they grow together, I think it could be really special.”
As the pair have continued to bond during the offseason, continuing to build chemistry on the field is an important factor to consider.
