Josh Doig earns Scotland call-up as former Hibs star replaces injury-stricken Everton ace

Former Hibs left-back Josh Doig has earned his first call-up to Scotland's senior squad ahead of the games against the Republic of Ireland and Ukraine to mark yet another young full-back coming through the ranks at Hampden Park.

Doig, 20, has featured for Scotland's U18s and U21s in the past, excelling at a young age despite being released by cross-city rivals Hearts as a 17-year-old. Marking his first start for the Easter Road outfit back in August 2020, Doig went from strength to strength in the capital by signing a new-long term contract and being awarded the SPFL Young Player of the Year award for his exploits.

With Scotland's full-back contingent arguably being the best young force in the world due to current stars such as Andrew Robertson and Kieran Tierney being shadowed by prodigies such as Aaron Hickey, Nathan Patterson and Calvin Ramsay, it was always going to be tough for Doig to force his way into the side. However, with Patterson dropping out of the camp due to an injury sustained against Ukraine in midweek, he has been given the nod ahead of the crucial ties over the coming week.

Elsewhere, David Turnbull has dropped out of the side thanks to a slight knock picked up on Celtic duty that he hasn't been able to recover from in time/ Declan Gallagher is his replacement, the St Mirren star set to replace Grant Hanley, who left the squad last week without a replacement.

Should Doig feature, the Hellas Verona star could be joined by former Hibs team mate Ryan Porteous in making their debuts for the Tartan Army in what would be a proud moment for fans across the nation, and subsequently join Hickey and Jack Hendry in making appearances for Scotland whilst under the guidance of an Italian side.

Scotland need just two draws from their final two games of the group stages to achieve promotion in the UEFA Nations League, which would bring about an easier route in terms of the Euro 2024 qualification process.
