Josh Campbell gets first Scotland U21 call-up as Hibs kid rewarded for fine form

Hibs youngster Josh Campbell has been called up by Scotland U21 for the first time.

Campbell joins fellow-Hibee Josh Doig (19) in Scot Gemmill's squad for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Turkey and Kazakhstan later this month.

The call is a reward for Campbell's fine form in green and white since breaking into the team, initially under former Easter Road boss Jack Ross.

The 21-year-old midfielder has continued strongly under Shaun Maloney, making 28 appearances this season and scoring once - against St Mirren.

Joining Campbell and Doig in the pool is Hearts kid Connor Smith (20) - currently on loan at League One Queen's Park - but there is no place again for former Jambo Aaron Hickey.

Question marks over his international future persist as the 19-year-old - currently starring at full-back for Serie A side Bologna - withdrew from squads in 2020 and 2021 due to injury, before pulling out of another in November citing the need to rest.

Hickey is capped at U17 level, but no higher, despite being a standout for the Italian side in the past two seasons since sealing a £1.5million switch from Gorgie.

Capable of playing both left and right-back, he is seen as a star of the future but is not in Gemmill's pool.

Scotland face the Turks at Hearts' Tynecastle Park on March 25 - the 7.05pm kick-off will be broadcast live on BBC Scotland.

The Young Team will then travel to Almaty to take on the Kazakhs four days later.

Scotland currently lie third in their group and will hope to pick up points against two sides struggling below them as they look to catch Denmark in second spot.

Belgium are out of sight in qualifying Group I with a 100% record of six wins from six, only conceding one goal in the process.

The full squad is as follows.

Elliot Anderson (Bristol Rovers, on loan from Newcastle United), Harrison Ashby (West Ham United), Scott Banks (Crystal Palace), Connor Barron (Aberdeen), Jack Burroughs (Ross County, on loan from Coventry City), Josh Campbell (Hibs), Tom Clayton (Liverpool), Josh Doig (Hibs), Lewis Fiorini (Lincoln City, on loan from Manchester City), Ross Graham (Dundee United), Jay Henderson (St Mirren), Scott High (Huddersfield Town), Nicky Hogarth (Nottingham Forest), Marc Leonard (Brighton), Lewis Mayo (Partick Thistle, on loan from Rangers), Glenn Middleton (St Johnstone, on loan from Rangers), Calvin Ramsay (Aberdeen), Zak Rudden (Dundee), Cieran Slicker (Manchester City), Connor Smith (Queen's Park, on loan from Heart of Midlothian), Stephen Welsh (Celtic) and Ben Williamson (Raith Rovers, on loan from Rangers).
