Many believe that he should have taken home the award last year. It has been argued that Josh Allen had a better overall season than Lamar Jackson did in 2023, but the Baltimore Ravens quarterback ended up winning the NFL MVP award for the second time in his career. The story may be different this time around, though, as Allen is putting together a season that may be undeniable when it comes to those who vote on league awards.
Josh Allen Is Making A Strong Case For MVP In 2024
It was the turnovers that kept Allen from winning the award last year. His 29 passing touchdowns ranked 5th in the NFL, but he was able to add an impressive 15 rushing scores as well, making him the top touchdown-getter in the league in 2023. He ranked 4th in passing yards, and only two guys finished with a better QBR.
But Allen also threw 18 interceptions in 2023, a little more than one per game. He also lost four fumbles throughout the season, bringing his turnover total to 22, which was second only to Sam Howell’s 23. As the game has grown more efficient over the years, the turnovers have begun to weigh heavier, and they cost Josh Allen an MVP award last year.

His improvement in ball security is a big reason for him currently being the favorite to win the award. Allen ranks in the top-10 in essentially all of the major statistical categories in 2024, and there are 21 quarterbacks in the NFL who have thrown more interceptions than he has (5). He has also limited his lost fumbles to just 2.
Team Success Will Play A Factor
Another factor helping to boost his case is his team’s success. It was thought that 2024 could be a transition year for the Buffalo Bills, and it appeared that Allen’s stable of offensive weapons would be one of the weakest he’s had in recent memory. But after a 3-2 start, they’ve now won six in a row, including knocking off the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs in Week 11 while adding yet another chapter to the growing rivalry.
Should the Bills finish out the season as one of the top-2 teams in the AFC, then it will be tough to give the award to anyone other than their quarterback.
While the exact number varies, most US sports books have Allen listed around +150 to win the NFL MVP award. Lamar Jackson is close behind, though, listed around +200. The rest of the top-5 is currently rounded out by Jared Goff, Jalen Hurts, and Patrick Mahomes.
