Jose Mourinho aims new dig at Tottenham in fresh Harry Kane trophy message

Jose Mourinho has fired a fresh dig at Tottenham as the new Fenerbahce manager hails England captain Harry Kane.

The 61-year-old has recently been appointed in the Turkish capital, signing a two-year contract to take charge of an eleventh club in what has been a storied managerial career.

Mourinho coached Kane at Tottenham, a period in which the Three Lions captain scored 45 goals in 62 appearances under the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’.

While Kane certainly impressed on an individual level under Mourinho during their time in north London, the spell ended in disappointing fashion.

Seemingly brought in to take Spurs to the next level after missing out on major trophies under Mauricio Pochettino, Mourinho was in fact sacked by Spurs only six days before the Carabao Cup final in April 2021.

Spurs ultimately lost that game to Manchester City, denying Kane of a first major trophy at club level.

Though judging Kane’s stunning career by way of trophies feels somewhat harsh given the remarkable amount of goals he’s scored both at club level and on the international stage, much has been made about his lack of team awards.

A move to Bayern Munich seemed almost certain to yield at least a Bundesliga title but the German giants ended up finishing third in what was a nightmare campaign as Bayer Leverkusen won the League, despite Kane’s haul of 44 goals in 45 appearances.

Speaking to Topps, Mourinho said he would have delivered the Carabao Cup to Spurs had he not been sacked.

“Kane has scored goals for Tottenham, England, and I had no doubts that he would score goals for Bayern,” Mourinho said.

“Harry is a fantastic, complete player who scores goals from all over the pitch but isn’t selfish – he assists, drops deep, builds play, presses, defends. The only thing he is missing is to win a trophy. He was my player at Tottenham, and I was going to win one with him, but I was sacked six days before the final.”
