A historic night for England as they defeated Mexico 3-2 in their World Cup last-16 tie was soured by an injury sustained by Jordan Henderson after he fell over an advertising board in the post-match celebrations.
The Brentford midfielder and former Liverpool captain, who was an unused substitute in the game, was taken to hospital and it was confirmed later that he had broken his wrist and is out of the tournament.
Shortly after the full-time whistle, as England’s players went to celebrate in front of their fans, medical staff were seen rushing to the vicinity. Henderson was given oxygen and carried off on a stretcher.
Jude Bellingham told the BBC: “He’s in a bit of bother but our medical team have got everything under control probably. Best not to give too much detail when I don’t know too much what is going on. Everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”
Thomas Tuchel, the England head coach, said later: “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure, the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
Henderson had been booked during a fractious match over a confrontation on the sidelines. His sole appearance in the finals tournament came as an 84th-minute substitute against Panama.
By playing at a fourth World Cup – he was first picked by Roy Hodgson for the ill-starred 2014 campaign in Brazil – Henderson equalled a record set by Bobby Charlton, who appeared from 1958 to 1970.
