Jordan Henderson transfer latest as Saudi Arabia interest grows in Liverpool captain

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is facing a decision over his Anfield future as transfer interest from Saudi Arabia grows.

The Reds skipper is a target of former team-mate Steven Gerrard, who last week was named new manager of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.

And it is believed other clubs are also attempting to lure Henderson to Saudi Arabia with the 33-year-old's situation likely to be determined by the end of the week, although the ECHO understands Liverpool have not yet received any official interest in the player.

The midfielder still has two years remaining on his current Anfield deal but will come under increased pressure for a starting role in the engine room following the summer signings of £95million duo Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Henderson was among the large group of Reds players who returned to the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday morning to begin pre-season training.

The Saudi Pro League has been making a concerted effort to increase its profile this year with a number of high-profile players being offered lucrative salaries to make the move to the Middle East, aided by the country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) - the majority shareholders of Newcastle United - acquiring 75% stakes in four clubs last month.

Roberto Firmino, who departed Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of last season, last week signed a three-year deal with Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli. Cristiano Ronaldo was signed by Al Nassr in January, with Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, Kalidou Kouliably, Edouard Mendy and Marcelo Brozovic also having gone to the Saudi Pro League this summer.

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has also moved, although he has joined second tier side Al-Qadisiyah as head coach. Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq have also been linked with a move for another ex-Reds player in Divock Origi, who is currently at Serie A side AC Milan.

Another Liverpool midfielder, Thiago Alcantara, is also a reported target of Saudi clubs.
